Reddit has been inaccessible in Indonesia for years. If you’re trying to access it from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, or anywhere else in the country, you’re hitting a government-enforced block — not a glitch, not a regional server issue. This guide explains what’s happening and how to get around it reliably.
Why Reddit Is Blocked in Indonesia
In July 2022, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs — now called Komdigi — blocked Reddit under PSTE regulation. The regulation requires large digital platforms to register with Indonesian authorities and comply with content takedown requests, including the removal of adult material.
Reddit hosts user-generated content including adult communities. The platform declined to register under the PSTE framework. Komdigi’s response was to order all Indonesian ISPs to block access.
That block is still active. Reddit has not registered, and Komdigi has not reversed the order. There is no indication this will change in the near future.
What Else Is Blocked in Indonesia
Reddit is not alone. Indonesia maintains one of the more extensive internet filtering lists in Southeast Asia. Other blocked or intermittently restricted services include:
- Steam — blocked intermittently, caused major disruption to Indonesian gamers
- Vimeo — blocked since 2014 for adult content
- Tumblr — blocked since 2018
- PayPal — was temporarily blocked in 2022 (now restored)
- Yahoo! — was briefly blocked during the PSTE enforcement wave
- Thousands of other sites across gambling, adult content, and “anti-government” categories
The filtering list is dynamic. Sites get added and removed. A service that works today may be blocked tomorrow.
Why a Simple DNS Change Often Doesn’t Work
The most common advice for bypassing internet blocks is to change your DNS settings to Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). This fixes DNS-level blocking — where your ISP’s nameservers return a bad result for a blocked domain.
But Indonesia’s block on Reddit is not just a DNS block. It’s a combined DNS and IP-level block. Even if you bypass DNS filtering, your ISP can still intercept or refuse to route traffic to Reddit’s IP addresses.
Additionally, DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) is partially effective but doesn’t help with the IP routing block. You might resolve Reddit’s IP correctly and still get a connection timeout when you try to reach it.
The only reliable way to reach Reddit from Indonesia is to tunnel your traffic through a server that isn’t subject to Indonesian filtering — which means a VPN. But not all VPNs work reliably either.
How Veilora Bypasses the Block
Veilora uses VeilShift™, an obfuscation layer built on VLESS+XHTTP+Reality. Here’s what that means in practice.
When you connect to Veilora, your traffic doesn’t look like VPN traffic. It’s structured to appear as ordinary HTTPS web browsing. Indonesian ISPs see what looks like normal encrypted browser activity — not a tunnel to a blocked service.
This matters because Indonesian ISPs, particularly Telkom (IndiHome), have become more aggressive at detecting and blocking standard VPN protocols. OpenVPN and WireGuard connections are increasingly unreliable on Indonesian networks.
VeilShift™ achieves a 98% success rate in Indonesia across tested ISP networks, including Telkom IndiHome, Indosat Ooredoo, and XL Axiata.

Server Recommendations for Indonesia
Latency estimates are from major Indonesian cities to each server location.
| Server | Jakarta | Surabaya | Medan | Bali | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | ~25 ms | ~30 ms | ~35 ms | ~28 ms | Best choice for most users |
| Tokyo | ~65 ms | ~70 ms | ~80 ms | ~68 ms | Good for gaming, stable |
| Sydney | ~75 ms | ~80 ms | ~95 ms | ~78 ms | Backup option, AU content |
Singapore is the clear first choice. It’s geographically close, has high capacity infrastructure, and latency is low enough that you won’t notice any slowdown on Reddit.
Tokyo is worth using if Singapore is congested, or if you’re gaming on servers in Japan or Southeast Asia.
What Else Gets Unblocked
Once you’re connected through Veilora, you get access to everything that’s blocked in Indonesia:
- Reddit — obviously
- Steam — full storefront and game downloads
- Vimeo — video hosting and streaming
- Tumblr — blogs and community content
- Gaming platforms — various blocked or geo-restricted gaming services
- Any other site on Komdigi’s blocking list
Free vs Paid
| Feature | Free Tier | Paid Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Data per month | 10 GB | Unlimited |
| Email required | No | No |
| Server locations | Limited selection | All locations |
| VeilShift™ obfuscation | Yes | Yes |
| Speed throttling | No | No |
| Price | $0 | From $3.99/mo |
10GB per month is enough for daily Reddit browsing, general social media, and light streaming. For heavy use — 4K video, large Steam downloads, or remote work — a paid plan is the better option.
FAQ
Is using a VPN legal in Indonesia?
Yes. VPN use by individuals is not illegal in Indonesia. The government blocks certain websites and services, but using a VPN to access them is not a criminal offense under current Indonesian law. Many businesses, remote workers, and individuals across Indonesia use VPNs regularly.
Why does Reddit show a timeout even with DNS changed?
Because Indonesia’s block includes IP-level filtering, not just DNS. Changing DNS gets you the correct IP address but doesn’t help you actually reach Reddit’s servers — your ISP can still drop that traffic. A VPN routes around this entirely by sending your traffic through a server outside Indonesia.
Will Veilora work on Telkom IndiHome?
Yes. IndiHome is one of the most aggressive ISPs for blocking both websites and standard VPN protocols. Veilora’s VeilShift™ obfuscation is specifically effective against the deep packet inspection methods IndiHome uses. It’s been tested and confirmed working on IndiHome connections.
Does this work for the official Reddit app?
Yes. Once Veilora is connected, all traffic from your device — including the Reddit mobile app — is routed through the VPN. The Reddit app will work normally.
